Hawaiians were certainly men of the sea; in fact, the most prized catch is called the `ulua, or "man of the sea" (also known as the jack trevally). They depended on the sea for life, and always maintained a great respect for the land and ocean. Even today, fish hook charms and necklaces are popular among locals... they are often seen hanging from the rear view mirrors on cars.
